No Paltry Poultry — Annette Rochelle Aben

 I state right off the bat, that there was a time when our family’s meals were planned around items we gathered from the food banks. I say banks because we would go to our local food bank, and a couple other friends would go to their local food banks and then we would meet up to swap out items with each other. We know we couldn’t have made it through those lean times without the help and support of the generous folks who contribute to food banks. That being said… here is my Ode to Canned Chicken.

Oh, food bank chicken

It comes in can

You won’t need a knife

It seems a bit weird but

It could save your life

You say you’re hungry, and have no money

You’ll eat that food bank chicken

You can mix it with broth

Add some noodles

Stretch it with food bank veggies

You’ll feed oodles and oodles

From just one can of

Food bank chicken

If you have some mayo

And food bank bread

You could make a nifty sandwich instead

Eat it on crackers

With canned American cheese

That food bank chicken

Is sure to please

When you’ve not enough cash for grocery buying

Food bank chicken is worth the trying

Bless those generous donors, every day
